SSD, Free Space and PC Requirements: What to Check Before Installing

Read storage as a separate requirement from RAM and video memory. Free disk space does not increase your installed RAM, and an SSD condition cannot be satisfied merely by having enough space on a hard drive. Check the exact game edition before downloading or purchasing hardware.

Start with the published table for your edition

Open the official store or publisher page and record the listed storage amount, whether an SSD is required, and any extra notes. Legacy, Enhanced and remastered editions can have different requirements. Use the source linked on the game page rather than transferring a value from another edition.

For a worked example, the reviewed Cyberpunk 2077 requirements include a storage and SSD condition. Open the cited official table for the current details. A requirement for a specific game must not become a default storage assumption for every other game.

Check available space on the intended drive

The capacity printed on a drive is not the same as currently available space. Check the drive or library where you intend to install the game. Keep the publisher's requirement, the launcher's displayed installation size and the free-space reading separate; they describe different observations.

Do not assume that a download's compressed size is the final installed size. Check what the launcher currently requests. Updates may change installed files, and the space needed during an update can differ from a static requirements table. There is no reliable universal extra-space multiplier for all games.

When installation or an update fails

  1. Read the launcher's actual error and check the target drive's available space.
  2. Confirm that the selected library and drive are available and that the game edition matches the source you checked.
  3. Follow the launcher's official repair steps for the specific error. Do not delete unrelated files or change system settings based on a generic storage estimate.

Steam's installation and update troubleshooting guide covers library repair and other installation checks. Its steps address launcher problems; they do not certify that your CPU or GPU meets a game's requirements.

What an incomplete storage entry means here

If a catalogue value has no confirmed unit, this site identifies it as unverified. A bare number must not silently become GB or MB because a previous import generated a byte count. Likewise, an implausible official value needs clarification from the publisher rather than a guessed replacement.

Use the compatibility form to enter free storage and SSD information when the published source requires it. Check CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system and API conditions independently. Passing the storage check alone is not a complete Can I Run It result.
